ANALYSIS OF THE SITE-GENERATING THE CONCEPT

A city like Mumbai has a very complex city fabric- in terms of

Nodal connections through vision,

Line of bifurcation

Interconnectivity

Obstructions

And changes with time and perception.

The  other prominent condition that determines the growth of the city is the Fringe- is a condition where there is an abrupt ending of the city fabric either due to change in topography or change an element (earth or water).

Marine Drive promenade at the tip has this fringe where there is a stretch of land jutting out to the sea but an abrupt end of the city skyline. It is a dynamic site which has changed historically over a period of time. And as it gives the panoramic view of the city it is an attractor which triggers varying programmes diurnally as well as annually.

The installation we propose is the extension of the properties that of the city fabric and use it to blur the fringe. This installation picks up the loose string of the fabric left at the abrupt end of N.C.P.A and starts to gradually merge into the sea.

Although the promenade offers a panoramic view it has always been more of  two dimensional viewing plane and the sea an intangible space. With the insertion of this installation it increases the vision from 180 degrees to 360.

It also frames the views of the city and beyond what is always seen. It is also susceptible to wind and tidal force which changes the view frames like the ever changing city. It changes with time as the users are the generators of the programme. Due to the varying topography it plays with levels creating varying vantage points and experiences.
